Math
Opening Doors to Algebra
Taking Risks | Working Persistently | Communicating Productively
In our middle schools, math is becoming more than a subject, it’s becoming a shared journey. Across classrooms, students are engaging in collaborative problem-solving, explaining their thinking aloud, and supporting one another as they build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. This shift reflects a broader vision for what math can be: a space where every student is challenged, encouraged, and seen.
At the heart of this transformation is our commitment to increasing access to Algebra by 8th grade. Just three years ago, 172 students were enrolled in Algebra. During the 2024-2025 school year, that number has grown to 389 students districtwide. This remarkable increase is not just about enrollment—it represents expanded opportunity and a deliberate move toward equity. By eliminating compressed or accelerated tracks, our Double Math 8/Algebra course allows students to complete all required middle school math content alongside high school Algebra in one year, without skipping essential learning. Students grow together in heterogeneous classrooms, learning from each other’s perspectives and strengths.

Mission and Vision, Mathematics
SMFC students become enthusiastic and proficient learners of mathematics who are able to share their thinking, use multiple representations, and build on the ideas of others.
Increase meaningful mathematical discourse and sense-making to build fluency, flexibility, and strategic competence in all students.
Our PK-8 Math Program is designed to support the three SMFCSD Strategic Plan Goals:
-
Create learning opportunities for all PreK to 8 students resulting in closing the achievement gap and culminating in personal and academic success in high school and beyond.
-
Reduce inequitable outcomes for all students and staff by prioritizing equity, access, and inclusion.
-
Provide a safe, caring, nurturing and culturally responsive environment for all students to meet the needs of the whole child.
